More Canadians
From coast to coast, one in five Canadians count on us to protect what matters – their homes, cars and businesses.
Adapting to
Climate Change
We are working on all fronts to tackle the challenges of climate change – from research and development to product design and data exploitation – to build strong, prosperous and resilient communities.
Climate change has a direct impact on all Canadians and businesses. Last year, severe weather conditions led to numerous events involving hail, wind and rain, which affected communities from coast to coast.
According to the Catastrophe Indices and Quantification (“CatIQ”), the industry-insured damage for 2016 topped $5.2 billion, smashing the previous annual record of $3.2 billion set in 2013.
Our climatologist and Intact Data Lab are studying risk maps for severe weather events across Canada to identify and better understand high-risk regions. We have developed new products like the Enhanced Water Damage Package, and via our Insurance is Evolving® website, we proactively provide useful tips and advice to homeowners on how to protect their homes. We continue to make strategic investments in adaptation partners, like the University of Waterloo, to develop cost-effective adaptation solutions on a local and national scale.

Intact Centre on Climate AdaptationTM
Since 2009, Intact Financial Corporation has been working with the University of Waterloo on a national roadmap for climate change adaptation. The study identified numerous solutions to protect Canadians against the growing threat of severe weather events.
Our relationship evolved in 2015 with the introduction of the Intact Centre on Climate AdaptationTM (“Intact Centre”), an applied research centre focused on developing innovative adaptation solutions to climate change risks facing homeowners, communities, industries and governments.
The momentum in adaptation is building. In a joint venture between the Intact Centre, the Ontario Government and the City of Burlington, 4,000 homes in Burlington will be receiving home assessments through the Intact Centre’s Home Adaptation Assessment Program (“HAAP”). Homeowners will learn ways to install and maintain cost-effective measures to reduce their risk of basement flooding.
The Intact Centre’s report on Climate Change and the Preparedness of Canadian Provinces and Yukon to Limit Potential Flood Damage, released last year, will inform governments on how to identify opportunities to protect Canadians and our communities, and will assist future infrastructure planning.
We are also collaborating with and investing in partners across Canada, like the Conservation Council of New Brunswick and David Suzuki Foundation, to emphasize the importance of adaptation and helping Canadians, families and businesses adapt to climate change.
